About

Tamara Stephas is a landscape painter and sculptor whose work draws deeply on her Pacific Northwest origins. She is a graduate of Willamette University and Gage Academy of Art. Stephas has exhibited extensively across the Northwest, and her work has been shown at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham and the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture in Spokane.  Recent honors include a 2013 CityArts Artwalk award.

Tamara received a 2013 GAP to expand on the series she began with the painting Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast. It was composed of two paintings: a romantic-era landscape hung as a window shade, and a contemporary street scene framed as the window. The two images invite consideration of wilderness and urbanization, the notion of “progress” in different eras, and the history (and future) of our region and our society. With GAP funding she will acquire woodworking tools and materials to complete three or more sculptural paintings.
