About

Waverly Fitzgerald received 2010 GAP Award funding to take time to attend a workshop and to write and prepare a manuscript for submission for her collection of essays titled My Year in Flowers: The Adventures of an Amateur Naturalist in the City. For two years Waverly has been observing and writing about the plants she walks past in the eight blocks between her apartment on Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and her workplace. The essays explore the natural world of the city as a unique ecosystem, challenge the notion that the city and nature are in opposition, and explore different methods of knowing plants.
