Program Overview
Artist Trust x Gage Academy of Art Professional Development for Visual Artists is a program that offers two, eight-week series. The first series is on how to present yourself as an artist and the second is on business fundamentals of being an artist. Each are led by artist Dawn Cerny. You can choose to take just one or both series.

About this series
In this eight-week class, you’ll build essentials of a strong portfolio and learn best practices for presenting your work. Facilitated conversations and guest lectures from artists, curators, and gallerists help you understand how to talk about your art practice in an engaging and informative way and what to expect when pursuing opportunities to exhibit and support your work. You’ll leave this session with a polished portfolio, new connections with art-world professionals, and a roadmap of what you can do next to advance your work.

About this series
This class covers the business skills you need to professionalize your art practice. Experts provide practical, straightforward information and guidance on taxes and finance, legal concerns, and communications best practices for visual artists. By the end of this eight-week session, you’ll be able to create a plan to broaden the audience for your work and take the next steps in turning your studio practice into a business.

About the Instructor
Dawn Cerny is a Seattle based artist and arts educator. Art critic Jen Graves described Cerny’s work as “…literary, historical, and political. It’s also messy, pulpy, direct, and poetically profound. Oh, and it’s funny.” Cerny uses her work to look for aspects of the comedic and tragic aspects of humans’ drive for safety and desire to belong. Her works on paper, sculptures and collaborative projects have been exhibited at the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; Western Bridge, Seattle; Seattle Art Museum; Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR; Cooper Cole Gallery, Toronto, ON; Derek Eller Gallery, New York, NY and part of Nancy Shaver’s booth at Viva Arte Viva exhibition in the 2017 Venice Biennale. Cerny’s exhibitions and work have been written about in Art Forum, Art Week, Art On Paper, The Stranger, Seattle Weekly, and the Seattle Times. Cerny received a BFA in printmaking and painting from Cornish College of the Arts and an MFA in sculpture from Bard College Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Annandale-on- Hudson, NY. Currently, Cerny is teaching Printmaking and Design and Color at Seattle University.

Cancellation/Refund Policy
Students who wish to cancel their place in this program must notify Program Coordinator Zach Frimmel (zach@artisttrust.org) to qualify for a tuition refund. Tuition credit options are not available for this program.

  1. If Artist Trust and Gage cancel program:
    A full tuition refund (including service fees) will be given back to registrant.
  2. If student cancels:
    • Before Sept 1, 2019; 100% refund after $40 cancellation fee
    • After Sept 1, 2019; no refunds will be accepted.
