Alchemy Art Center is a community art center located on San Juan Island in Washington. Our facilities include a ceramics studio, printshop, and photography darkroom. In addition to membership, classes, and community outreach, we also offer Artist Residencies on our grounds from June-September.

In exchange for providing 10-15 hours/month of arts instruction and programming to our island community and visitors, AIRs are invited to live and work at Alchemy, free of charge. Because Alchemy does not offer private studio space, priority is given to AIRs who specialize in printmaking, photo, or ceramics and are planning to work in our community studios, sharing the space with members. Because of our instruction requirement, applicants must have experience teaching. AIRs can expect to provide 10-15 hours/month of teaching or other arts programming while at Alchemy.

In addition to being a community art center, Alchemy is also a communal residence. AIRs must be comfortable coexisting with up to 10 other people of different backgrounds, and be able to keep a tidy communal kitchen and bathroom as well as help out with property chores.

Our AIRs, along with our interns and staff, are the public face of the studio and contribute to Alchemy’s magic. They support studio members with their projects, provide instruction via pre-planned classes or workshops, and help maintain the studios. ​
