As we experience the ongoing social changes resulting from Covid-19, HBI recognizes that engaging with art is more important than ever. Artists are responding to the crisis in innovative ways, prompting us to acknowledge and embrace this new virtual reality. Accordingly, the 2021 HBI Artist Program seeks proposals for new or existing work that can prominently occupy a digital / online / remote format, including innovative forms of presentation and implementations that allow remote audience participation. Proposals must relate to HBI’s mission of developing fresh ideas about Jews and gender, and we invite submissions that emphasize the experiences of Jews of color.

The 2021 HBI Artist Program provides an artist the opportunity to publish a printed exhibition catalog and have an online solo exhibition for twelve weeks under the auspices of the Kniznick Gallery at Brandeis University. The selected artist is awarded a $2000 exhibition stipend and a $500 honorarium to produce two virtual public programs during the exhibition. The online exhibition and public programs will run from March–June 2021.

Eligibility Requirements:
Applications (in English) from outside the United States are welcome. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and not enrolled in a degree program.

Provide the following information:
1. The theme of the proposed exhibition and how it relates to HBI’s mission of developing fresh ideas about Jews and Gender. Proposals that emphasize the experiences of Jews of color are encouraged. (1 page)

2. Brief Artist statement (200 words max)
A short proposal on how you envision the online presentation of your work and the manner in which your work might engage a remote/virtual audience through technology and/or virtual programming. Please be as specific as possible. (100 words)

3. 10-15 images/files of the work for consideration, (jpg. format for images). Number the images/files to correspond with a separate Work List. Each image/file should not exceed 1 MB. If your work is time-based or has video documentation, you may include video still or other appropriate documentation. Please provide any links to your videos/audio online. (website, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)

4. Budget: Provide a proposed budget detailing total exhibition expenses, up to $2000. List additional funding sources that will support your project beyond $2000, if necessary.

5. Artist CV (2 pages max)

6. Work List: Artist name, title, year. medium, dimensions. Provide a short description, if necessary.

7. Two letters of reference from individuals you have worked with in a professional capacity; letters may be emailed directly to Debby Olins at dolins@brandeis.edu. Emailed references should have your name in the subject line.
