Ashland Creek Press is pleased to announce that submissions are open for the sixth Siskiyou Prize for New Environmental Literature, judged this year by Deb Olin Unferth and sponsored by Ashland Creek Press and the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.
The 2021 Siskiyou Prize is open to published books and unpublished book-length manuscripts in fiction and nonfiction, including novels, memoirs, and short story and essay collections. The winner will receive a cash award of $1,000 and a two-week residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology during the 2022-2023 residency season. All unpublished manuscripts will be considered for publication by Ashland Creek Press.
Deb Olin Unferth is the author of six books, most recently the novel Barn 8. She has written about industry farming in both fiction and nonfiction, and her essays and stories have appeared in Harper’s, the New York Times, The Paris Review, Granta, Vice, and McSweeney’s. She has received a Guggenheim fellowship, three Pushcart Prizes, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. An associate professor at the University of Texas in Austin, she also is the director of the Pen City Writers, a creative-writing program at a south Texas penitentiary.
The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, founded in 1970, fosters creativity, inquiry, and place-based reflection, deepening the relationships between people and nature. The Center offers workshops, residencies, and community events at its campus on the central Oregon coast, at the edge of a Nature Conservancy preserve and in the center of the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area and a United Nations Biosphere Reserve.
