Verum Ultimum is thrilled to announce that renowned critic and curator, Richard Speer will be curating this year’s edition of “The Living Mark”.

Richard Speer is a critic and curator whose reviews, essays, and articles have appeared in ARTnews, Art Papers, Artpulse, Salon, The Los Angeles Times, Visual Art Source, Art Ltd, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Post, Newsweek, Salon, The Huffington Post, GLASS Quarterly, The Oregonian, Surface Design, and Digital Photo Pro. From 2002 to 2015 he was visual-arts critic at Willamette Week, Portland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning alternative newsweekly. He is co-curator of the forthcoming exhibition Sam Francis and Japan: Emptiness Overflowing (LACMA, Spring 2023) and author of The Space of Effusion: Sam Francis in Japan (Scheidegger & Spiess, 2020).

About this Call for Art

Artists are invited to explore, “The Living Mark” for the eighth year in a row and enter work that is any interpretation of the call. The intention of the call is not to drive the work, but to spark an impetus, and discover unique visions to showcase. ALL MEDIUMS are welcome. Mark making is an integral part of the creative process and the evidence of the artist’s hand is always exciting to see. The most successful works seem to be enlivened by these marks (whether abstract or representational). This call emphasizes the process with a focus on the individual style of the art maker (whether impassioned, studied, or subdued). What kind of marks and/or mediums do you use to lead to great results? Or perhaps you see the theme as a chance to express art as a metaphor for (or reflection of) life itself and our relationship to this driving force? What is your personal interpretation of this metaphoric or symbolic vehicle, “The Living Mark”?

Exhibition will open at the Portland, Oregon Gallery in late April of 2021 and run through the end of May.
