Organization Name: 540WMain

Organization Location: Rochester, NY

Type: Calls & Submissions

This is an upcoming public art project 540WMain is spearheading, alongside local photographer Quajay Donnell. We are looking for BIPOC Women artists to complete a public art piece and are reaching out to local organizations to help spread the word.

540WMain is seeking to install a mural in Rochester, NY that pays homage to Anna Murray Douglass and Rosetta Douglass Sprague. While much is known about Frederick Douglass, his wife Anna is often left out of the discourse. She played an essential part in his rise and their daughter Rosetta provides one of the few glimpses we have into her mother’s profound life. This project aims to highlight the story and voices of the Black women who make significant, but historically overlooked, contributions to the world.

The project is to be completed in the summer of 2022. We are accepting submissions through 3/15/22 from underrepresented women artists who have an interest in public art, community impact, and historical narratives. Two selected artists will receive a stipend of $1000 each along with funds for materials necessary to complete the art piece.
