SOIL is currently accepting applications for new members!

Founded in 1995, SOIL is a not-for-profit cooperative space established, supported and operated by local artists. SOIL exists as an alternative venue for artists to exhibit, develop, and advance their work, and is committed to exhibiting and celebrating art of diverse artists’ backgrounds, media and content.

In 2020, SOIL celebrated its 25th anniversary. To note a few of our accomplishments from the past year: we founded the Fishbowl Artist in Residence program, hosted our first Young Artist in Residence, exhibited the work of 51 artists (19 of whom were from out of town), and successfully moved our annual fundraising auction to the world wide web.

We recognize that the last 15+ months have been difficult for so many reasons. SOIL is grateful to have been able to keep our doors open throughout this time, to continue to be a hub for the creative community in Seattle. Now, we are looking forward to welcoming new folks into our membership. We’ve revised our membership process to acknowledge inequities from previous calls for entry and in the spirit of removing barriers, we are waiving membership dues for incoming BIPOC members.

As we begin to gather safely, we look forward to hosting a more inclusive version of SOIL and to the influx of energy that always comes with welcoming new members. BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Unfortunately, our membership cannot accommodate currently enrolled students.

The responsibilities of membership:
Gallery sitting once per month
Bi-monthly meetings
Job to help run the gallery
Shepherding exhibitions
Donate to annual auction
Dues (waived for BIPOC members)

The perks of membership:
Participate in an artist run co-op style gallery whose mission is to support and uplift other artists and creatives alike
Solo exhibition in the Backspace Gallery once every 2 years
Occasionally participate in traveling exhibitions with the SOIL membership
Build community

The best way to learn what being a SOIL member is like is to connect with the membership. Reach out to: gallery@soilart.org for conversation and questions.
