Convergence 2020: RESONATE / Residencies
As a single tone is intensified and enriched by accompanying vibrations or harmonies, Convergence 2020: RESONATE is calling artists to enrich their creative practice by immersing in a city where east layers with west, modern resonates with ancient, and cultures converge.
con·vergence: kənˈvərjens – (noun) 1. the coming together from different directions so as eventually to meet. 2. a gradual change that results in things or people becoming similar or developing something in common.
Green Olive Arts’ annual CONVERGENCE Residency invites artists from a broad spectrum of creative practices and cultural backgrounds to a 4 week season of shared research, production and immersion in the textured landscape of an ancient city.
Dates: March 19 to April 15, 2020
Emerging and established artists of all disciplines are welcome to apply to this residency. In the application process, each artist is must submit a unique proposal based on the theme of “Convergence 2020: RESONATE as a starting point for new works influenced by this season of creative community and context. The theme is intended to inspire and encourage dialogue, rather than be prescriptive or demanding.
resonate: ˈre-zə-ˌnāt (verb) – to intensify and enrich a musical tone by supplementary vibration; to produce a quality of richness and variety; to evoke a response; to relate harmoniously; to strike a chord.
Applicants must submit the online application form, CV, portfolio of recent works, artist statement, application fee and complete an interview.
Each artist will have a shared studio space, with access to the furniture, tools, secure WiFi and the resources needed to create new works inspired by their experiences.
Airport transfers and all related ground transport are provided, as well as a private hotel room in the new Hotel Al Mandri, which has amazing views of the mountains and is near the studios and the ancient medina. Two meals a day are included with the residency, to sample the range of Moroccan cuisine … and of course, plenty of Moroccan mint tea. Artists will participate in interactive round tables to stir creativity and invite new perspectives and our staff will provide connections and networking with the local community. As part of the immersion into the local arts and culture, a half-day Artisans of Tetouan workshop visit is included in the residency, as well as outings to the beautiful mountain village of Chefchaouen and the Mediterranean fishing town of Azla.
Artist will have access to on-site assistance and program coordination from Green Olive Arts staff, and at the culmination of the residency, there will be an open studios/exhibition event to provide dialogue with the local community and display works in progress by participating artists in residence.
The Convergence 2020 Residency Fee is 44,000 Moroccan Dirhams (approx. $4700 USD). Participants are responsible for their own airfare to/from Tanger (TNG) or Tetouan (TTU), Morocco. A non-refundable 200 MAD ($20 USD) application fee is due upon application, and a 10,000 MAD deposit is required within a month of acceptance, to secure a space in the residency.
