Position Title: Development Director
Reports to: Chief Advancement Officer
Location: MOHAI McQuaid Resource Center at Georgetown
Classification: Exempt, Salaried, Full-time
Schedule: Monday – Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends
Rate of Pay: $90,000 – $100,000 per year

Position Description:
The Development Director is responsible for planning and implementing MOHAI’s annual fundraising program to provide for the short and long-term needs of the organization. A new position in the organization, the Development Director will spearhead development efforts as the museum continues to grow and will have the opportunity to shape and build the development function of the museum. This position will report to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) and will work closely with Executive Director (ED), Capital Campaign Director, and appropriate board-level committees. The Development Director is responsible for the strategy and management of major gift operations, supervision of five development staff, and the cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of major gift prospects to benefit the museum. This Development Director will also manage MOHAI’s planned giving program. This position is a member of the Advancement team.

Key Responsibilities:
• In partnership with the CAO and the ED, develop, supervise, and execute MOHAI’s annual fundraising plan, to include: major gifts, corporate & foundation relations, membership and annual fund, events, and planned giving.
• In collaboration with the Capital Campaign Director and the Advancement team, assess fundraising opportunities and establish fundraising objectives for the organization.
• Deepen the organization’s culture of philanthropy and build meaningful relationships between MOHAI and its community of supporters.
• Work collaboratively with staff leadership, board members, and the Advancement team to direct the strategic identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donor prospects and implement effective fundraising strategies for giving.
• Manage a relationship portfolio of 100-125+ major donors and prospects with capacity to give a minimum of $5,000 annually and/or ability to provide planned gifts.
• Actively solicit contributed support from major donors for unrestricted museum operations, the MOHAI Foundation, and others.
• Set weekly and monthly donor contact goals (calls and visits), and achieve annual goals for substantive contacts, independently and with board members, to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors.
• Ensure that all interactions are culturally responsive, respectful, and based on a foundation of MOHAI’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
• Partner with the Advancement team in the development of marketing materials for all fundraising efforts.
• Work with the Advancement team to analyze strategies and results of major gifts campaigns. Create a strategy for leveraging donor data to build a long‐term donor pipeline.
• In partnership with the CAO, create and manage revenue projections and expense budget; track and report on progress toward goal to ED, CAO, and CFO including contracts, gifts and pledges.
• Assign, plan, and oversee the work of the development staff. Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
• Ensure staff accountability for excellence and outcomes through clearly defined, collaboratively established, and measurable goals.
• Empower staff through active and inclusive communication and delegation. Measure progress and provide feedback and coaching in regular team and one-on-one meetings.
• Oversee the development and implementation of the museum’s membership and annual fund programs.
• Develop a strategy for outreach to and stewardship of planned giving prospects and donors. In collaboration with the Marketing & Communications team, update print and web-based supporting materials for a planned giving program.
• Work with the Marketing & Communications team and Donor Events Manager to strategize and help execute cultivation events for major donors and prospects.
• In collaboration with the CAO and Capital Campaign Director, oversee major donor cultivation and stewardship events, including History Makers, Innovation Exchange, donor receptions and exhibit opening preview events. Be a visible presence at Advancement team special events.
• In collaboration with the CAO and ED, ensure proper donor recognition in all forms, at both locations, and in appropriate publications. Oversee accurate donor lists for said recognition strategies.
• Manage development policies and practices, including but not limited to gift acceptance policies, donor acknowledgement, recognition, and reporting.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of donor communications and prospect management, including documentation of major gifts interactions within Altru major gifts module.
• Work closely with the Finance department and the Database & Research team on pledge and payment reporting accuracy and reconciliation.
• Opportunity to serve on IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) Committees.
• Attendance at museum-sponsored events may be required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• 7+ years of successful development experience (including major gifts experience) with a track record in planning and implementing fundraising campaigns, closing gifts and meeting goals.
• Bachelor’s degree and CFRE/fundraising certification or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
• Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles. Knowledge of tax planning principles and techniques that favor charitable giving.
• Previous experience creating and implementing fundraising plans. Proven ability to use analytics and metrics to evaluate effectiveness and measure performance across a variety of fundraising techniques (major gifts, corporate & foundation relations, events, planned giving, etc.).
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to be articulate, creative, and strategic in presenting a compelling case for support. Ability to communicate ideas with enthusiasm to donors and to effectively match the interests of donors to museum needs.
• Personal record of success in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major individual and institutional gifts.
• Experience working with Board members to cultivate and steward donors and secure significant gifts.
• Demonstrated skills initiating and managing projects, working independently, and meeting deadlines.
• Knowledge of Seattle and Puget Sound region donor community preferred.
• Demonstrated excellence in the management, supervision, and professional development of staff.
• A collaborative nature, with the ability to quickly establish credibility and gain the respect and support of colleagues, donors, and volunteers.
• Willingness to be hands-on in a role that requires a high level of energy and professionalism.
• Exemplify ethical standards of professional fundraising, including confidentiality as warranted.
• Proficiency with fundraising databases such as Altru plus strong competency with MS Office software.
• Willingness and ability to travel between museum locations occasionally as required.
• Bilingual and multilingual skills valued.
• Enthusiasm for MOHAI’s exhibits, programs, and mission.
