The School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington has two exciting openings for the staff positions of Instructional Technician 2: PhotoMedia and Instructional Technician 2: IVA + PhotoMedia. The School of Art + Art History + Design (SOA+AH+D) engages and educates students in essential issues of visual history and literacy, the creative process and visual communication, and innovative and socially responsible design. We work closely with leaders in the arts, academic and business communities to ensure that our students understand the role that this education will play in their future success as professionals and global citizens. SOA+AH+D has approximately 40 faculty and 23 staff members serving approximately 600 undergraduate and 60 graduate students plus more than 1,000 non-majors enrolled in our courses.

INSTUCTIONAL TECHNICIAN 2: PHOTOMEDIA

The Instructional technician 2 provides academic and research support to faculty and students including in-class instructional assistance for digital tools, and design/development of instructional workshops for students to learn how to use use relevant tools, software and equipment. This position would provide support to courses that include video/photo/sound projects in the School of Art.

There is an emphasis on customer service for students. The position requires excellent organizational skills, effective prioritization and time management, a high degree of professionalism and sensitivity to diverse cultures, and strong skills in written and verbal communication. The position is highly collaborative with the faculty to carry out curricular goals for the program. There will be professional development opportunities to expand your technical skill set with emerging technologies.

Typical Duties
Will work in a highly collaborative manner with Faculty and administration to plan equipment, space, curricular support and maintain a safe environment.

Communicates complex technical information effectively with less- or non-technical users, often under pressure, while maintaining a positive and cooperative attitude. Supports and encourages student learning with audio, video, 3d, and photography editing software, sound recording and mixing equipment; in Photo/Media computing lab and sound studio; Provides training for students and faculty in Adobe software and develop instructional workshops and demonstrations for related digital tools and equipment; Prepares and delivers demonstrations for students in collaboration with instructors; Creates materials and manuals to support student learning and introduction to topics.

Oversees maintenance and repair of PhotoMedia labs, studios, classrooms and equipment: shooting studio, digital lab, large format print lab, B&W lab, Gallery/Exhibition spaces, sound studio and equipment checkout; Coordinates classroom/studio maintenance and sanitization.

Maintains equipment inventory; develops and manages a checkout system and policies for equipment including documentation and training for student use; Organize equipment storage and assist in space planning/redesign proposals for Council; Maintains computer lab; monitors calibration processes.

Maintains and evaluates equipment and technology and makes purchase recommendations; Order course-related materials and supplies; Assist the Program Chair in budget tracking for course fee purchases and updating/applying revised or new course fee; Collaborates with students, faculty and staff in writing STF grant proposals for new equipment.

Demonstrate to and mentor students in producing digital prints and train students on how to use laser and inkjet printers; troubleshoot software issues; prepare and run files for student & faculty prints on large format printers; maintain all printers and ink supply and maintenance contracts.

Maintain darkroom and chemistry; demonstrate darkroom usage, washing and drying prints. Ensure students know and enforce safety protocols as necessary.

Will train and lead the work of student staff.

Acts as safety officer in area of responsibility; teach safe handling of equipment and materials; maintain area for cleanliness as well as safety; Serve on the School’s Safety Team. Ensure users and stakeholders know safety guidelines and enforce safety protocols as necessary. Maintain laboratory safety plans and safe storage of chemicals.

Will work with faculty to develop program specific social media strategy and collaborate with Marketing Communications team members to execute the plan. May post to social media sites, in line with the plan.

Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor’s Degree in photography, video, animation, digital printmaking/photo, and sound OR two years of college course work in major study area AND two years’ experience in the specific area of operation OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional:
Experienced with standard silver-based film shooting and processing techniques, 35mm, medium and large format film camera operation, darkroom equipment and techniques
Proficient in Adobe software (in particular, Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, and inDesign, Audition, Affinity Photo, Davinci Resolve, Ableton Live, Audacity).
Proficiency with Digital still cameras and video equipment and lighting (LED, Electronic Strobe, light meters) .
Knowledge of sound equipment: microphones, digital keyboards, Presonus digital mixer.
Knowledge of high-end digital printing, plotters, and slide, flatbed, and film scanners.
Demonstrated dedication to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and sensitivity.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNICIAN 2: INTERDISCIPLINARY VISUAL ARTS (IVA) AND PHOTOMEDIA

-demo proper usage of 17” printers;
-provide assistance regarding printing and software issues;
-prepare and run files for student & faculty prints on large format printers;
-maintain all printers and ink supply

Supervises/trains student staff or volunteer studio monitors.

Responsible for creating and maintaining a digital archive/ library of student projects.

Acts as safety officer in area of responsibility; teach safe handling of equipment and materials; maintain area for cleanliness as well as safety; Serve on the School’s Safety Team.
