Open Call 2020 for Residency
Taepyung Salt Farm Art Project

Taepyung Salt Farm X LAMPLAB seeks artists to submit entries for the juried exhibition, ‘Art Like Salt.’ The winners will be chosen to participate in a residency program in Shinan, designated a ‘Slow City’, in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, with the opportunity to create work in any of the following format, photography, video, installation, sculpture, or sound with the theme of ‘Anticipation for the Future.’

Art Like Salt is…
‘Art Like Salt’ is the Taepyung Salt Farm Art Project sponsored by Taepyung Salt Farm Co. (C.E.O. Sangil Kim) and curated by LAMPLAB (Director Suejin Shin). Taepyung Salt Farm is located on Jeungdo Island, known for large tidal flats and long sunny days that create the ideal conditions for Korea’s famous sea salt. Taepyung Salt Farm also operates the Salt Museum, once a salt storage, now preserved as a national cultural heritage. Many people visit Jeungdo Island every season to see the famous beautiful sunsets. We have created a new special exhibition hall in the Salt Museum which we hope will bring artistic inspiration.

● Theme: Anticipation for the Future
We, humans, have the ability to image the forthcoming days. The present-day we are living on is founded on the belief that we have tomorrow upcoming. Our ability to anticipate the future became an indispensable skill for us to survive through food, climate, diseases, and all sorts of issues. We, however, still helplessly lose battles from time to time on predicting the future. We get caught in the rain because we failed to foresee the weather. We still get overwhelmed by the world smartphones have changed. The world is changing faster and faster. The speed of the change is widening the gap between generations and regions on what they are experiencing. The gap makes the difference in competition, and that completes the evil loop. Maybe, we should not say we predict the future. We just hope for the best in the future. For whom and what should we pray when we are now living in an age human and machines coexist?
We are seeking for the artist who would look for answers together in Jeungdo, where time flows slowly in Korea, where everything changes so rapidly.
