The City of San Marcos Arts Commission seeks to commission a mural on the back wall of the shopping center located at 110 E. MLK Drive in San Marcos, Texas. The wall faces South LBJ Drive and is a prominent landmark as motorists drive into the city’s downtown area.

The City of San Marcos is seeking professional artists/artist teams to submit their qualifications and statement of interest in completing this project.

Artist/Artist Team Stipend: $80,000

Project Objectives

Create a mural that will serve as a distinctive entry to our vibrant Downtown district;
Artistically interpret community input for a visual representation of our City,
Support the City’s visitor and tourism industry by enhancing our inventory of public art
Project Background and Scope

The wall is 200’ x 20’, or approximately 4,000 sq. ft. The property line is adjacent to Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way, with the ground sloping away from the wall into a drainage ditch parallel to the railroad tracks.

The design should incorporate large visual elements with limited use of small details. It should be easily viewable by drivers on the roadway and discourage people from getting up close, since the wall is directly adjacent to railroad tracks and difficult terrain.

The selected artist or team will need to present plans for lifts or scaffolding and demonstrate willingness to work within UPRR guidelines for accessing their ROW.
