ABOUT PILCHUCK GLASS SCHOOL
Pilchuck Glass School (PGS) is an international center for glass art education. Our serene campus in Stanwood, Washington, is nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. PGS has a gallery and administrative office in Seattle, Washington, located in historic Pioneer Square.
From May through September every year, our summer and fall program offers a series of courses as well as residencies for established artists in all media. Summer sessions vary in length and offer concurrent courses in a variety of glass working processes for artists of all skill levels. Small classes taught by world-renowned artists and instructors emphasize experimentation and teamwork while fostering individual initiative and expression. PGS also offers residencies for both emerging and established artists during the fall and spring. Increasingly, PGS is introducing new programming to populations who have traditionally lacked access to or significant representation in our programming, as part of our commitment to creating an inclusive community. this type of educational experience.

ABOUT THE POSITION
Reports to: Studios Manager & Artistic Director
The Seasonal Technician is a part-time, temporary position who will oversee all campus studios, focus on preparation, upkeep repair, and maintenance of studio equipment as it relates to the educational program. In cooperation with Seasonal Staff and Campus Assistants, he/she/they will ensure safe use and access to campus studios during the spring and summer programs. In 2022, this position will fill in for the full-time Studios Manager while he is on leave and upon his return, will assist in preparations for studio operations during the summer program. To accomplish this, the Studio Technician will work closely with the entire campus staff as well as Seasonal Staff and Fellows. This position will report to the Studios Manager and in his absence, to the Artistic Director.
The Seasonal Technician must have excellent organizational skills with a capacity to execute tasks with accuracy, consistency, efficiency, and with an attention to detail. He/She/They must maintain a pleasant demeanor and professional work style, with an ability to function professionally in a community setting. This role requires the Technician to work independently and as part of a team with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks under pressure. This position must maintain a high level of honesty, integrity, and confidentiality – along with a sense of humor.
This is a part-time, hourly position with an estimated average of 20-24 hours per week with flexible scheduling available. Compensation is $18 – $22 per hour, depending on experience. This position also has accrual of paid vacation and sick time.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Works closely with the Studios Manager to determine priorities and approaches for studio upkeep, repair, and planning
• Fills in as primary emergency equipment response when the Studios Manager is absent
• Maintains, repairs, and improves all studio equipment, related facilities, utilities, and tools in all campus studios
• Ensures all studios are ready for start of program season, assessing each session(s) needs to support it and closes all studios when not in use
• Provides safety orientation to program participants as needed
• Works with Studios Manager and Seasonal Staff to oversee safe use and access for all studios, prioritizing tasks to support the educational programs
• Prepares studios for specific program needs, examples include instructors’ demos, visiting artists, and special events
• Maintains appropriate quantity of consumable materials in studios with assistance from the Storekeeper & Supply Coordinator
• Provides technical support to Coordinators as requested
• Tracks gas and glass use in the Hot Shop and Annex
• Works with the Studios Manager to order equipment, parts, and materials for repairs/upgrades
• Orders and processes return of propane, oxygen, and other gases, safely delivering tanks to studios as needed
• Organizes and maintains studio/class/program-related materials for day-to-day and long-term storage. Coordinates the end of session campus-wide clean up with help from Seasonal Staff and Fellows
• Provides studio assessment and recommendations at the end of the season or as requested by the Artistic Director
• On call for campus emergencies. Examples include studio equipment, electrical, medical, and/or environmental
• Attends scheduled weekly staff meetings and all other required meetings
• This role requires flexible hours that may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and/or holidays
• Other duties as assigned
• Extensive knowledge of gas and electric furnace operation and upkeep
• Extensive knowledge of equipment and tools used in the fabrication of all types of glassmaking
• Advanced metal and woodworking skills
• Understanding of electricity, plumbing, brick, and refractory methods as it relates to equipment and studio needs
• First Aid/CPR/AED Certified (training or re-certification provided)
• Safe operation of mechanical equipment, e.g., forklift and standard shift vehicles
• Current knowledge of laws and standard of health and safety (of ability to learn)
• Excellent organizational skills with a capacity to execute tasks with accuracy, consistency, efficiency, and with an attention to detail
• Working knowledge of computer software, such as MS Office – Outlook, Word, Excel
Education/Work Experience Requirements:
• 1-3 years’ experience as a glass studio technician responsible for maintenance and improvement or replacement of equipment and tools
• Valid, unrestricted driver’s license
• Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time and traverse rugged terrain
• Must be able to talk, listen, and speak clearly with fellow staff, board members, trustees, and visitors
• The ability to walk, ascend and descend stairs and ramps in the office and on campus
