Arbutus Folk School in historic downtown Olympia, Washington is currently accepting applications for the position of Arts Instructor in all disciplines. Hourly pay ranges from $15 to $28 according to experience in arts instruction. Artists new to teaching but confident in their craft are welcome to apply.

Arbutus Folk School offers classes and workshops in arts, culture, craft, and heritage. The Arbutus Folk School mission is to enrich lives and build community through joyful, hands-on learning with master artisans. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit working to inspire lifelong learning in a supportive environment; increase access to arts, culture, and heritage experiences for our community; promote intergenerational and intercultural connections; and support a strong creative economy.

Depending on the subject, our classes will vary in length and intensity. Some classes may be taught in a single session or some may meet weekly for several months. During Covid, we have limited class size to very small groups. Instructors set their own class schedules in collaboration with our Program Administrator.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis, with review of applications at the end of every month; the sooner you apply, the more open positions remain available. At this time, we are especially interested in applications for the following:

Cultural Arts Instructor: Artists whose art form reflects the place they live or the place they’re from, or whose art form is rooted in their cultural, occupational, or ethnic identity.

Woodworking Instructor: We are seeking a woodworking instructor who can offer classes for all skill levels, including beginners, oriented around the completion of a project.

Fiber Arts Instructor: Arbutus Folk School’s weaving loft is filled with underutilized floor looms – join our team to teach weaving classes and reinvigorate Marjorie’s Loft after a long Covid hiatus. We are also interested in applications from artists who can offer sewing classes for youth.

Ceramics Instructor: We are seeking ceramics instructors who can offer wheelthrowing or handbuilding classes for students of all skill levels, including beginners.

If you are interested in applying, please carefully review our prospective instructor packet. Then, view and complete our online application. For questions, email info@arbutusfolkschool.org.

Access to the arts and professional opportunities for artists are often disproportionately available to privileged people groups, neglecting the full spectrum of cultural assets and needs in our communities. In our mission to enrich, empower, and connect through the arts, we especially encourage people of color, people who live in rural areas, people with disabilities, women, immigrants, people whose first language is not English, and LGBTQ community members to consider applying to open positions at Arbutus Folk School.
