The Wing Luke Museum seeks teaching artists to develop and implement studio visual arts curriculum intended for high school aged youth in any medium for the summer, fall, and winter quarters of the 2020/2021 YouthCAN Program. Creative work produced by youth will culminate into a group exhibit at the end of each quarter in the Frank Fujii Youth Space at the Wing Luke Museum. The required commitment per selected teaching artist is one quarter.
The Wing Luke Museum is the nation’s only museum dedicated to the pan-Asian Pacific American community and is located in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. The Wing’s mission is to connect everyone to the rich history, dynamic cultures, and art of Asian Pacific Americans through vivid storytelling and inspiring experiences to advance racial and social equity.
YouthCAN is a free, afterschool arts program hosted at the Wing Luke Museum for high school students, ages 14-19. The program is designed to provide exposure to arts professions, increase knowledge and familiarity with the Chinatown-International District, build community and leadership, and to connect with the museum, its mission, and its programs.
SCOPE OF WORK
The selected teaching artist per quarter will be expected to collaborate with YouthCAN staff in overall planning and implementation of the curriculum for that quarter. This work includes attending planning meetings, conducting independent research, creating learning goals, developing and executing four-week intensive (summer quarter; including participation with the museum’s outdoor summer music event, JamFest, and optional participation with local block party, Hai! Japantown) or an eight-week (fall/winter quarters) program schedule of activities. Exact teaching schedule within each quarter will be determined with the selected teaching artist. Visual arts studio projects should be appropriate for high school aged youth between the ages of 14-19 and with varying art and English-speaking capabilities.

YouthCAN Fall Quarter 2020

COMPENSATION + BUDGET
The Wing Luke Museum has allocated $1,000-$1,500 teaching stipends per quarter. In addition to existing supplies made available for the purposes of this program, there is a $400 maximum budget for studio materials per quarter.

Please write a letter of interest that addresses the following prompts:
1. Describe your interest in art education and approach to teaching.
2. How will your arts practice/medium intersect with the themes of community building and social justice?
3. What does a successful quarter as a teaching artist look like for you and for a cohort of students?
Final decisions for summer quarter 2020, will be made and contracts signed by Friday, May 29, 2020. Selections for fall and winter quarters will be made within 1-2 months before both quarters’ respective dates. Teaching artist selections will be determined by a committee of YouthCAN staff based on a review of the submitted materials and a short in-person or remote interview. Selection criteria includes: interest and experience in youth arts education, demonstrated artistic experience, and experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Wing Luke Museum’s commitment to advancing racial and social equity includes centering artists of color, particularly those living and/or working in or have familiarity with the Seattle Chinatown-International District.
