About
Alma García earned a fellowship from the Rona Jaffe Foundation. Her short fiction has appeared as an award winner in Boulevard, Passages North, and Narrative Magazine; and is forthcoming in the anthology, Roadside Curiosities: Short Stories on American Pop Culture (University of Leipzig Press/Picador). A former newspaper reporter and editor, she teaches fiction writing at the Richard Hugo House, among other venues, and has taught at the University of Arizona, where she received her MFA in 1999.
Alma received 2013 GAP Award funding for assistance with childcare, providing time to undertake the thorough revision of the draft for Shallow Waters, her novel in progress. Shallow Waters takes place over the course of a year in the desert border city of El Paso, Texas. At its inception is a harrowing week in the lives of two guardedly neighboring families. She has previously published short stories and the publication of this novel would assist in her professional progress as a teacher.
Alma received 2009 GAP Award funding for childcare, allowing her to transform a short story collection into a novel.
