Anne Drew Potter

Anne Drew Potter is most recently a resident artist at Pottery Northwest in Seattle, where she produced her latest installation The Captains Congress at the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh. She attended Indiana University for her MFA in Ceramics and The New York Academy of Art for her MFA in Figurative Sculpture, having completed a BA in Art at Swarthmore College. Anne Drew was the Matsutani Fellow and a two-year resident at the Archie Bray Foundation starting in 2007. She has recently been awarded a German Chancellor Fellowship to pursue a year-long project at the Zentrum Für Keramik in Berlin. This was her third international fellowship, having traveled to the Royal Academy of Art in 2004 and the International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark in 2010. Her installation Le Cirque de l’Armèe Rouge, shown at Dubhe Carreño Gallery in Chicago was reviewed in the June 2010 issue of Art in America. Anne Drew’s work is represented in several public and private collections including the Herberger Museum of Art at Arizona State University. She is represented by Mindy Solomon Gallery, St. Petersburg, and Dubhe Carreño Gallery, Chicago.

In more recent news, in 2013, she received a €4,000 prize for her piece in The Figure: Sculpture in Ceramics currently at the Westerwald Ceramic Museum in Germany.

As part of her Fellowship’s Meet the Artist requirements, Anne Drew Potter conducted a visiting artist workshop in Karen Kosoglad’s printmaking class at Nova High School in Seattle in June 2013. The workshop, (de)Constructing Identity, began with a brief presentation by Potter in which she presented her own work and that of one of her primary sources, the German Dadaist, Hannah Hoch. Both Potter’s and Hoch’s work address questions of identity and how these relate to the body and image politics, critical issues for teenagers. The presentation was used as a springboard for a collage project completed by the students during the following weeks, in which they utilized a variety of source material, both contemporary and historical, to address and express themes of identity they found personally meaningful. Kosoglad, as well as the students, were thrilled with the making process and the artwork produced, and Potter has been asked to collaborate with Nova’s science and art teachers to create a new course called Creation Through Science and Art.
