Gail Grinnell graduated with a BFA in painting from the University of Washington in 1988. She has participated in residencies at the Centrum Foundation, in 1993 and 1990;  Fundación Valparaíso in Mojácar, Spain, 2007; Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ireland, 2008 and 2010; and the Jentel Foundation, Wyoming in 2010.

Gail has received grants and awards from Artist Trust, Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and 4Culture, King County, Washington. In 2012 she created RUFFLE, a site-specific installation for the Suyama Space in Seattle. In 2014 she developed “angle of repose” (with Sam Wildman), a large-scale temporary work for the sculpture court of the Boise Art Museum in Boise, Idaho. Her work has been published in periodicals such as Sculpture Magazine, Art Ltd, Fiber Arts Magazine, The Seattle Times, The Stranger, City Arts, Willamette Week, Artweek, New American Paintings, Studio Visit and others.
