About

Henry Luke is a painter and muralist, but first and foremost a community organizer raised their entire life in occupied Duwamish land known as Seattle. They began at age 19 painting murals on local businesses in South Seattle. The development of mtheiry artwork paralleled their increasing commitment to social movements, especially in the Chinese and Filipino communities struggling for liberation both in diaspora and in the homeland. Through participation in social movements, they saw their mixed-race Chinese-americanized experience not as a limitation to being “truly Chinese,” but as an opportunity to make unique contributions to these international struggles and to forge links of solidarity. They grew to view their art as something that must be drawn from and contributing to a collective process of revolution, not as an individual pursuit that belongs only to themself.
