About

Jalayna Carter is a storyteller from St. Louis, Missouri. She studied literature and journalism in the Midwest and developed an interest in interdisciplinary media. As a 2018 Jack Straw Writers fellow she explores experimental forms and trends in poetry. She’s had pieces published by Third Point Press, Reality Beach, and Puerto Del Sol as well as in two anthologies, Black Lives Have Always Mattered by 2Leaf Press and the 2018 Jack Straw Writers Anthology. Connect with her and her work at www.JalaynaCarter.com.

Jalayna received 2018 GAP Award funding for her visual poem collection, Cicada My Spirit. It is an extension of the poetry manuscript, Cicada, which uses the tenets of mythology and dystopias to reflect on dysfunction within interpersonal relationships and the equally brutal and bewitching attachments we develop.

Artist Trust thanks the Amazon Literary Partnership for underwriting this award through Artist Trust’s Corporate Partnership program. For information about supporting Washington State artists, visit here.
