Sonya Lea

Sonya Lea received 2007 GAP Award funding to complete work on a series of essays that address “the nature of remembering and forgetting on the personal, mythic and collective levels,” and then prepare this compilation for publication. Her husband’s memory loss during cancer treatment and its impact on their family and community prompted her ruminations on and research into the experience of brain injury, as well as into various aspects of identity. She describes her style as creative non-fiction built with a collage-structure, and writes that this work is about “the things that happen when the personal narrative is interrupted by forgetfulness.”
